Robotics in joint replacement surgery

In 2022 Mediclinic Constantiaberg became the first hospital in the southern suburbs of Cape Town to
offer Mako Smartrobotics™ for joint replacement surgery. Dr. Reid was the first surgeon to use the Mako robotic arm for Total Knee Replacement (TKR), Partial Knee Replacement (PKR) and for Total Hip Replacement (THR) surgery at Constantiaberg. Along with his surgical team he now performs these procedures regularly.

A CT scan is used for detailed pre-operative planning. The Mako robotic arm provides haptic (tactile), visual, and auditory feedback to the surgeon, as well as real-time data regarding bone resection and ligament balancing, to ensure accurate surgery and component placement.

The robot does not function autonomously; the surgeon performs the procedure and remains in
control of the operation. Mako should be viewed as a sophisticated aid that a surgeon can use to
improve accuracy in joint replacement surgery.
